Hello security and alarm professionals,

Not everyone is naturally good at sales, and that’s okay. You can still build a successful home service business without starting as a strong salesperson.

On the latest episode of the Entry&Exit podcast, we sat down with Jack Carr to talk about the sales challenges he faced (and still does) and the steps he took to overcome them.

Main takeaways include:

  • Hire for your weaknesses early: Jack came from an engineering background and struggled with sales, so one of his first moves after buying the business was hiring a dedicated salesperson. Bringing in someone whose job was to sell allowed the company to grow faster and let him focus on operations.

  • Cut overhead so you can afford to grow: Instead of hiring expensive local staff right away, he hired overseas team members for roles like CSR, AR/AP, and coordination. Lower overhead made it possible to add support, improve service, and reinvest money back into growth and local employees.

  • Build a network of operators and learn from them: Many of the biggest improvements came from talking to other owners who were ahead of him. Being around people running larger businesses helped him see what systems he needed, avoid mistakes, and find faster ways to scale.
